Uniting to Assist Bush Fire Recovery Efforts

For immediate release

16 January 2020

Strathfield Council has joined forces with the Office of Local Government (OLG) and other metro councils in bush fire recovery efforts.

In the wake of the ongoing bushfire crisis, a “councils helping councils” resource sharing initiative called the Local Government Bushfire Recovery Support Group has been established. Several meetings have already taken place with metro councils across Sydney offering support.

Strathfield Council will provide in kind resources to the value of $200,000 over the course of 6 weeks to assist the Local Government Bushfire Recovery Support Group. In addition to heavy plant equipment, the offered recovery services are in the form of waste collection, work health and safety, recovery coordination and damage assessment.

Skilled staff in Council’s parks, engineering, land survey, works inspection and environmental health teams have answered the call and are ready to provide on the ground assistance anywhere in the state of NSW where their knowledge and expertise is required.

The recent bush fires have devastated these communities. Council is determined to provide every assistance possible to enable a swift recovery.

More detailed information will be released as it becomes available.

Kurralee Childcare Prepares to Open in the New Year

Strathfield Council is pleased to work in collaboration with Lighthouse Early Learning Centre to ensure that child care services will remain operational in Homebush West, with a smooth transition for all families involved.

Kurralee will close on 20 December 2019 and undergo required maintenance. The much-loved centre will re-open on Monday 6 January 2020, under the new management of Lighthouse Early Learning Centre.

Council has worked closely with the community to understand childcare requirements and ensure our youngest residents are well taken care of, relieving initial concerns parents had about the possibility of relocating their children.

Manish and his family moved to Sydney from India and have no family support nearby, “we moved to Homebush West for Kurralee, so were incredibly disappointed when we heard it may close. My son has really come of out his shell at Kurralee and we are so happy and relieved it will remain open”.

Local residents, Diana and Asna agreed that they love the natural aspect of Kurralee and the green space, which is very important for families living in apartment blocks

Lydia from Lighthouse Early Learning Centre said “we are delighted to continue the long tradition of quality childcare in Homebush West, and look forward to working with the Council and community to provide local children with the best start possible.”

Visit www.lighthousechildcare.com.au or contact them on 9091 9650 for information on available places.
